- Wellness
In the eyes of the World, Madeira has come to be
known as the Floating Garden. This group of Atlantic islands, with
its century-old traditions, prides itself in its unequalled natural
characteristics and clean, fragrant air.
On this enchanted garden isle with its mild climate and average
temperatures of 19ºC in winter and 23ºC in summer, Madeira’s
visitors will encounter the ideal setting in which to enjoy the
perfect balance between body and soul.
Madeira’s rich natural and cultural heritage associated with its
political and social stability, healthy gastronomy and the
hospitality of its inhabitants provide a safe climate and make this
a very favourable destination. In these modern times the Madeira
Archipelago is considered to be a paradise of health and wellness
where the visitor may choose to enjoy both relaxing and invigorating
holidays at any time of the year.
Madeira is one of the oldest and most traditional European tourist
destinations. This trend began soon after it was settled, back in
the 15th century, at a time when the island was a compulsory stop on
the European trade routes. Madeira benefited greatly as a
destination from the expansion of the English crown in later
centuries. Due to its strategic position and exceptional climate,
Madeira became a port of call for stocking provisions and for the
“acclimatization” of her majesty’s subjects on their travels
to and from the English colonies in South Africa and India.
In the mid-19th century and as a consequence of the rise in the
number of visitors, rented summer houses and family homes gave way
to the island’s first hotels. Many people were attracted by the
therapeutic qualities of the Island’s climate in curing
respiratory diseases which were common at the time and difficult to
treat.
Good health in today’s world
Nowadays people are more concerned with their
health and wellness. Throughout time, people have acquired new
habits in order to prolong life and ensure themselves of the best
health conditions. People have become more aware that a life of
“moderation” achieved through fitness and a healthy diet are
essential to obtain a greatly improved quality of life. However, the
environment that surrounds us is fundamental to our wellness.
The archipelago of Madeira possesses both healthy and natural
elements: its unpolluted sea water, extracts of algae and plants,
fresh fragrant flowers and its clean air. Within this environment of
perfect harmony between Man and Nature, the proverb “a healthy
mind in a healthy body” makes perfect sense because the visitor
can truly experience great peace and spiritual calmness here.
